The stretch of the Danube between Melk
and Krems, known as the Wachau, was possibly the loveliest part of the entire
river. It, too, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is outstanding in its
landscape. Besides the actual landscape, which in and of itself would be enough
to make it wonderful, both banks are lined with terraced vineyards and dotted
with medieval towns and ruined castles.
Actually, by this time, we were
somewhat “castled-out”. We remembered a scene from the movie, Finding Nemo. In
this scene Dory, the fish that suffers from short-term memory loss and is a bit
ditzy, is swimming about her (very small) goldfish bowl. She sees the castle in
her bowl. “Oh my gawd, it’s a castle!”, she exclaims. The few seconds it takes
to swim around her bowl and arrive back at the self-same castle are enough for
Dory to have forgotten. “Oh my gawd, it’s a castle!, she exclaims again. And
again, and again, and again. Bar and I started to use this routine as we sailed
up the Wachau. “Oh my gawd, it’s a castle!”, one or the other of us would
exclaim. We were attracting quite a few puzzled stares. By the end of the
afternoon, it was obvious people thought we were quite certifiable. No one was
any longer sitting anywhere near us. That, or we must be the most uneducated
bumpkins ever – (where are those people from? Canada?)
